Teaching with Technology Portfolio: Course Descriptions
Below are a list of courses I have taught along with course descriptions and a list of technological tools I used. There are two main sections: courses from Penn State and courses from Cal State LA.
Penn State Courses
A list of math course descriptions at Penn State can be found here.
Fall 2013
Math 41: Trigonometry & Analytic Geometry (4 credits) -- Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry (3-4) Straight lines; circles; functions and graphs; graphs of polynomial and rational functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometry; conic sections. Prerequisite: MATH 21 or equivalent
Technology Used: Course Webpage (Weebly). On the webpage, I post homework assignments and homework solutions. The course also requires the use of MyMathLab.
Fall 2013
Math 231: Calculus of Several Variables (2 credits) -- Analytic geometry in space; partial differentiation and applications. Students who have passed MATH 230 or MATH 230H may not schedule this course. Prerequisite: MATH 141 or MATH 141H
Technology Used: Course Webpage (Weebly). On the webpage, I post lecture notes, homework assignments, and homework solutions. I also use Google Calendar to manage due dates for the course as well as office hours and special events (like review sessions). Course Webpage (Angel). On Angel, I use Angel Communication and Gradebook to communicate to students confidential information.
Summer 2013
Math 231: Calculus of Several Variables (2 credits) -- Analytic geometry in space; partial differentiation and applications. Students who have passed MATH 230 or MATH 230H may not schedule this course. Prerequisite: MATH 141 orMATH 141H
Technology Used: Course Webpage (Angel). On Angel I posted online lecture notes, homework assignments and solutions, grades in Gradebook, exam study guides and review problems. I also communicated with students using Angel Communication email. For screenshots, please visit my Angel Webspaces page.
Spring 2013
Math 251: Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations (4 credits) -- First- and second-order equations; special functions; Laplace transform solutions; higher order equations; Fourier series; partial differential equations.
(Teaching Assistant to Dr. Andrew Baxter) Math 471: Geometry for Teachers (4 credits) -- Problem solving oriented introduction to Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries; construction problems and geometrical transformations via "Geometer's Sketchpad" software. Intended primarily for those seeking teacher certification in secondary mathematics. Students who have passed MATH 427 may not schedule this course. Prerequisite: MATH 311W
Technology Used: Course Webpage (Angel). On Angel, I communicated with students using Angel Communication email. As a Teaching Assistant, I worked with students on lab assignments in Geometer's Sketch Pad and GeoGebra.
Spring 2012
(Teaching Assistant to Dr. David Little) Math 310H: Honors Concepts of Combinatorics (3 credits) -- Honors version of elementary and enumerative combinatorics. Fundamental techniques of enumeration and construction of combinatorial structures, permutations, recurrences, inclusion-exclusion, permanents, 0, 1- matrices, Latin squares, combinatorial designs. Prerequisite: MATH 220
Technology Used: Email. I communicated with students using Angel Communication email.
Cal State LA Courses
A list of math course descriptions at Cal State LA can be found here.
Math 100: Introduction to College Mathematics (4 credits) -- Prerequisites: Score of 50 or more on ELM; or MATH 091 with minimum C grade. Introduction to mathematical methods and reasoning, including logic, sets and set operations, combinatorics and probability, descriptive statistics, normal distribution, and margin of error. No credit toward mathematics or computer science majors. Graded ABC/NC
Technology Used: Course Website (Google Sites), no longer online. I posted notes, homework, extra credit, and study guides. I used the website to post class announcements.
Math 208P: Calculus III Workshop (1 credit) -- Activity for Math 208 students with emphasis on problem solving. Concurrent registration in Math 208 required. Open to all Math 208 students but mandatory for students whose grade in Math 207 is less than B-. Graded CR/NC
Technology Used: Email (Google Contacts). I collected student contacts and managed communication using many of the Google Contacts features.
